Voting was "a slap in the face of arrogance," 19-year-old teacher Mohammad Mehdi Bahrambeygi said, repeating a phrase used by Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that refers to the United States and its European allies.

"The sanctions have in fact allowed the country to progress in science, medicine and other fields" by forcing it to become more self-reliant and innovative, said Reza Khani, a 42-year-old Tehran resident.

Nahid Maleki, a 43-year-old housewife, proudly said she was casting her ballot "because of the leader's (Khamenei's) call" for Iran's 48 million voters to turn out.

She added: "I want the MPs to serve the people by passing laws which make life easier for the youth, like in employment and housing."
